“Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. ‘Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.’ But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3: 13-15 (HCSB)

Haiti Earthquake

With Christ set apart as Lord and giving reason for their hope, Baptist volunteers along with Haitian Baptists are working hand-in-hand. The Baptist efforts in Haiti are multi-national. In addition to “Buckets of Hope” being gathered across the US, Canadian Baptists have collected money to send to the Florida Baptist Convention where Haitian Baptists in Florida will purchase the ingredients and fill buckets to be shipped to Haiti.

Shortly after the earthquake struck, Puerto Rican Baptists gathered and shipped supplies to help in Haiti. Pastor Jorge Alvarez led his congregation to gather 200 bottles of water, medical supplies, and non-perishable food to send to the quake-zone.

The long process of debris removal and demolition has begun. Southern Baptists are helping churches and individuals to complete this task. Volunteers will be partnered with families and churches to remove damaged walls or to completely demolish a damaged home. Once again, this will afford volunteers opportunities to lift up the name of Christ and to show Christian love in action.

Southern Baptists can support the Haitian pastors through prayer. Visit www.namb.net/Pray4Haiti and participate in a virtual prayer walk around Port-au-Prince. Additional prayer walks will be added as new ministry sites are established.

“Buckets of Hope”

As the buckets arrive at the state collection sites, they are sorted, labeled, palletized, and shrink wrapped. Hundreds of volunteers are giving their time and energy to get the buckets ready to send to the shipping point. And every bucket is prayed over countless times by the volunteers who touch them as they move through the system. God is working in mighty ways, let us rejoice in the outpouring of love from His people called Baptists!
